Iranian Foreign Minister to Visit India Amid Kashmir Tensions

Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir issue, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit India on Thursday. The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi confirmed this in a statement.

According to AFP from New Delhi, prior to this visit, Araghchi had traveled to Islamabad where he held meetings with senior Pakistani government officials. He stated that Iran is ready to mediate to help ease the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.

In a phone conversation last week with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Araghchi said, "Iran is willing to work with sincere intent to reduce tensions."

Relations between Iran and India have historically been warm, although New Delhi currently maintains close security cooperation with Washington as well.

Last year, India and Iran signed an agreement regarding the development of the Chabahar Port, following which the United States threatened India with sanctions.

Following an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22 that left 26 people dead, Araghchi became the first senior diplomat to visit both India and Pakistan.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack, a claim that Islamabad denied. Since then, both countries' militaries have been exchanging fire along the Kashmir border.
